Area Information

Sevier County is located in the high plateau country of central Utah. Most of the towns lie near the Sevier River in a fertile valley – bordered on the west by the Pahvant Mountain Range and on the east by the Fish Lake National Forest.
Native American Influences
Many pre-historic Indian sites have been found in Sevier County. Sudden Shelter, an archaic site on Ivie Creek, contains one of the oldest time records in Utah - dating from 5080 B.C. to A.D. 1900. Sevier County is also home of Fremont Indian State Park where a pre-historic village was unearthed in 1985.
Richfield
The first settlers in the Sevier Valley included a party of ten men in 1864. They named their settlement Big Springs after the life-giving springs in the red-rocks mountains. Other settlements soon followed but were abandoned during the Blackhawk War in April 1867. Attempts to re-settle the area were not successful until 1870 and by 1874, 753 residents lived in Richfield.

Salina
Because of abundant salt deposits nearby, settlers in the northern portion of the Sevier Valley named their settlement Salina or “place of salt”. The Redmond Salt Mine, just north of Salina, is nearly 100 years old and is still active.
Monroe
In the summer of 1863, a small company from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints founded Fort Alma in the southern portion of the Sevier Valley. Fort Alma was abandoned due to hostilities with local Indian tribes and then, in 1871, was re-settled and named Monroe after the fifth President of the United States.
