BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAINTwenty minutes south of Richfield on Highway 89This caramel-colored rock formation is world famous as popularized by a song written by Haywire Mack and performed by Burl Ives. CLEAR CREEK CANYONTwenty minutes south of Richfield on I-70As early as 5200 B.C., prehistoric hunters and gatherers roamed this rugged canyon. Centuries later, Spanish explorers passed through it as did early trappers including Jedediah Smith – who left his initials and a date on the canyon walls. In 1985, during the construction of interstate 70, the remains of an ancient Fremont Indian settlement were unearthed. Five Fingers Ridge contained more than 100 structures and is thought to have housed up to 100 people in its prime. Materials excavated during the project are now on display at the Fremont Indian State Park, located in the canyon. Hiking trails are available for viewing petroglyphs and pictographs. COVE FORTThirty Five minutes south of Richfield on I-70Cove Fort was built as a way station for travelers in 1867 out of volcanic rock and limestone that were quarried nearby. It has been restored to original quality including authentic period furnishings and artifacts. The Fort is open daily from 8:00 am to sunset except during times of bad weather. Free guided tours are available. ![]() COVE MOUNTAIN ROADFrom Glenwood to KoosharemLocated in the Fishlake National Forest, this 25 mile scenic drive offers spectacular scenery and panoramic views of both the Sevier and Koosharem Valleys. The Koosharem Guard Station, built in 1910, is one of Utah’s first Forest Services buildings. Seasonal road of graded dirt. FISHLAKE NATIONAL FOREST45 Minutes Southeast of Richfield on Highway 24Named for Fish Lake, the forest occupies one million acres of beautiful scenery and wildlife. The aspen-lined lake draws people from around the world to try their luck at landing a trophy-sized Mackinaw trout. Fish Lake covers over 2,500 acres of volcanic basin and the nearby Johnson Reservoir includes another 670 acres. Excellent camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding and more. GOOSBERRY RESERVOIRS15 Miles East on I-70 (Exit 61)The Goosberry Reservoirs are a delight for those wishing to get away to cool aspen and fir forests. Eight reservoirs and several ponds provide nearly 50 acres of water surface. There are no camping or launching facilities and some area require access on foot. No fees. MONROVIAN PARKMain Street South Through Monroe (Follow Signs)This peaceful park is located in a canyon of the Fishlake National Forest and has a small creek running through it. The drive through the park takes one through towering canyon walls. REDMOND SALT MINE3 Miles North of Redmond on Northfield RoadOver 100 years old, this working salt mine produces 300,000 ton of salt annually.
