WETTING A HOOK

Sevier County offers a wide variety of fishing opportunities with most waters open year round 24 hours a day. A Utah Fishing license may be purchased from a number of stores locally. Be sure to pick up a copy of the fishing proclamation before wetting your hook. Here are just a few of the fishing opportunities in Sevier County.

FISHLAKE - This 2,500 acre lake is one of the premier fisheries in the state of Utah. Located at an elevation of 8,800 feet and with an average depth of 70 feet, the waters are cold and clear. Fishlake is stocked with rainbow trout, lake trout and splake and supports its own wild brown trout population. The lake is normally frozen from January until April when ice fishing is popular. Lodging, boat launch and guide services are available.

JOHNSON RESERVOIR - This 700 acre reservoir is about three miles northeast of Fishlake and is known for the brook trout that migrate from Sevenmile Creek. The average fish size is 10-14 inches. While the reservoir is open for ice fishing during the winter months, is is usually only accessible via snowmobile.

SEVENMILE CREEK - This scenic mountain stream flows into Johnson Reservoir following Forest Road 640. The stream is easily accessible via passenger car during the summer months and offers good cutthroat and brook trout. Sevenmile is managed as a wild trout stream and is therefore, not stocked.

GOOSEBERRY - The Gooseberry area is located east of Salina along Interstate 70. This scenic area includes a number of lakes at elevations over 9,000 feet. A few of the lakes include Gates Lake, Hamilton Reservoir, Farnsworth Reservoir and the Gooseberry Campground - all of which are connected with a trail system. The area offers a variety of trout, both wild and stocked, depending on the reservoir.

BIG LAKE - Located east of Glenwood, Big Lake can be reached in a passenger car, although the road includes a few fairly steep spots. Big Lake is stocked with catchable size rainbow trout, which can grow to over a pound by the end of the summer. The 35 acre lake cannot sustain fish during the winter months and the water level may fluctuate during the summer depending on water needs.

MONROE CREEK - Monroe Creek is located several miles southeast of Monroe and is stocked with catchable sized rainbow trout in its lower reaches and wild rainbows further up. The average size of the fish is around 10 inches.

CLEAR CREEK - Located along paved Highway 4 (parallel to Interstate 70) in the Fremont Indian State Park, Clear Creek is accessible most of the year. The creek is managed as a wild brown and rainbow fishery. In the lower parts of the creek, it is possible to catch brown trout over 3 pounds.
